Sweep–The Movie

So they’ve finally announced it in Variety–Sweep might become a movie. Here’s a link for more info:

I don’t know much more than you do, at this point–Alloy, which owns half of Sweep, made the deal. But I really love the screenwriter they’ve hired for the adaptation–he adapted one of my favorite movies, Chocolat, and has done several other terrific movies, so I feel like I’m in good hands.

But I don’t know anything about the schedule or timeline or casting–I won’t be involved in any of that. The author usually isn’t, unless they’re much bigger and more powerful than I am!

Thanks to everyone’s good wishes, and for all the excited tweets and posts! It’s so gratifying to see!

What’s really perplexed me is all the negative comments on some of the film sites, with people hating on Sweep without having read any of them, and saying it’s just like Harry Potter and Twilight. It’s so weird! Why don’t they read one of them first? Then they can hate on it if they want. It’s the dissing without knowing what they’re talking about that’s freaking me out.

But anyway: Sweep movie, possibly. Many things can still not work out. But my fingers are crossed. Thanks so much for all your support!

I accidentally found the first of these books when searching through a resale shop. It looked well-worn. It is even more so now. Though my mom doesn’t necessarily approve of me reading anything about witchcraft and such, I have loved the books I’ve read so far. They always manage to keep my interest. Morgan’s struggle seems so real and sometimes heartbreaking. It makes you just want to reach in and hug her. I can’t wait to find out more about the movie. Hopefully it will be kept as true to the original as possible. With the series being made of smaller books (I’m so glad you did it that way, by the way), it should be easier to adjust the movie. I so wish I could be in it.

  2. Jaylana says:

I found your books when I was in 7th grade (2002) and instantly fell in love. Morgan is real, and loveable, and genuine, and passionate. So relateable! And Hunter! and Skye! Even Cal is a realistic bad guy! lol. I shared the series with my group of friends and they hooked too. It even encouraged us to research Wicca – which we loved as well. lol. I’m happy for you. My only fear is that the movies will be a horrible portrayal of the wonderful books. Harry Potter wasn’t too bad…. but when they made Blood and Chocolate (Annette Curtis-Klaus) into a movie it was an utter betrayal to all that was special and sacred about the beloved book.

    PLEASE CATE!!! Don’t fall victim!

  3. Emmaleah says:

I love these books so far im hooked!!! I cant wait tell the movie comes out!!! i got all of my friends hooked, but the keep on taking my books away!!!lol!!!i just love the books ur such a great auther!!!

I originally got hooked on this series upon its initial release, when I was a pre-teen and felt left lost…I am a very big reader and truly love this series. Years later as an adult I still find my mind wandering back to this series when idle or between books. I have read, and reread these books, and also gifted them to other young women. I am anxiously anticipating the movie adaption.

  5. Elizabeth says:

I am so excited for the release of this movie! I have read, and re-read the series so many times and I am completely in love with it and all the characters! Ever since I first read the series, I have hoped for a movie or T.V. show, and I am so thrilled. My only concern is that they won’t stay true to the books. With such an amazing story line, though, they should not have to! Sweep will definitely be a favorite of mine for years to come!

  6. Louise says:

My daughter gave me the books she had (10 of them) I read them in no time, I am now waiting for the thirteen one that I reserved at the library, can’t wait to read it… Hope the movie will be a good representation of the books, don’t want to be disappointed.. Thanks Cate for these books I’m really hooded!

  7. Heather says:

I have been waiting on this for a very long time!!” Hopefully everything goes smoothly. I loved these books and have reread them over and over. Can’t wait.

  8. sandy says:

I got al the books at home, and i love those, i really hope that they make a movie of those, i will see them and buy them aswel

  9. Amy says:

I have loved these books since I read them in high school 7 years ago. I’ve re-read them a number of times since then. I will be so ecstatic if they finally make the series into a movie (or movies most likely)!!! ^_^

  10. Natalia says:

I don’t remember when I got these books but I remember how much I love/d reading them.

I’m wiccan myself and had been reading ‘charmed’ and ‘circle of three’ they are so different from eachother that it captured me in so many ways.

I wish there were more but…a movie would be fab.

  11. Amanda says:

Please please please don’t let Kristen Stewart anywhere near the Sweep movie. It would ruin the series and break my heart. I love these books. I read the series once a year! Thank ou Cate Tiernan. You rock!

  12. Amanda says:

Oh, and by the way @ Jaylanna: I’m with you on the Blood and Chocolate comment. The movie was such a let down. Just like the Twilight series. I hate when great books fall victim to crap movie interpretations…

  13. Marina says:

Loving the fact that they are making the Wicca series into a movie, but I am wondering when are they actually planning to make it? I have always loved the series it’s what made me want to learn about Wicca. I really really hope that they finally produce it…..

  14. david says:

cate, you have truly been blessed by he goddess, whether your wiccan or not. these books are fantastic . I have read and reread them. they totally moved me and my spiritual life. I have know began reading and researching wicca and am truly trying to learn more about it . thank you

  15. annylah says:

I love!!!!! the sweep series I found them when I was on a wiccan app I downloaded it recommended this book and I read to I fell in love instantly. I noticed that I love the book so much that I realized I was living like morgan. I noticed I was waking up and having diet coke and pop tarts for breakfast and that when her grades were bad in school so was mine and when they got better so did mine. now you might think im crazy but this really did happen I mean I wasn’t defeating the dark wave and stripping my father of his powers but you get what im saying.

  16. nikki says:

I have been hooked on these books since middle school! I came across the book through one of my teachers. I immediately fell in love so much I even named one of my children Hunter! lol I will read these books time and again. (I have all 15 and they are well worn!) I hope if they do turn this into a movie it’s a decent portrayal.

  17. First off, I’d humbly like to say I’ve been an avid fan of your books for such a long time. My adolescent years were very trying and the way you could relate to the struggles of Morgan and Naill—its helped me escape a lot of my own. You are a jewel in the eyes of the writing community for being so influential to so many young readers out there. So thank you so much Mrs. Tiernan!

On the subject of a movie being made, I am utterly ecstatic! Sweep has always been among my favorite series kept on my shelves at home and I can’t wait to see it on screen! Thank you again! If you ever do a book signing in Washington please let me know? I’d love to get my copies signed! 😉

  18. Seraphina says:

I’m from Germany and a fan of the series.
But I think the series should be made into a tv-series and not a movie.

  19. Macayla says:

I must say that as a follower of Wicca, I have found this to be one of the most accurate descriptions so far besides that of House of Night. I would be overjoyed if this series would become a movie or a series of movies! Would definitely pay to go see it :)

  20. Ethan Sharp says:

If you take Morgan’s power chant (an di allaigh an di aigh
an di allaigh an di ne ullah an di ullah be nith rah cair di na ullah nith rah cair feal ti theo nith rah an di allaigh an di aigh) and translate in Google Translate it to Greek. Make sure you translate Irish to Greek. Translate the Greek into English and you will get…complete nonsense!
This is what it translates to: The allaigh for submission of the allaigh the di ne di Ullah Dee Ullah is the rah Cair of the rah Dee Ullah Cair Dee rah make you feel hot ti The allaigh for submission. Voilá!

  21. Jen says:

I still remember the day I discovered these books – I had just been to the dentist and I had a £5 voucher for Waterstones and my mum took me to choose a book. I was 11 at the time. I was debating between the first book in this series and a different one, something to do with graveyards and ghosts (I was very into the supernatural at a young age!) I am so glad that I chose “Book of Shadows”, the first in the series. At the time I had no idea it was a series until a few months later when I saw the second, “The Coven” in my local library. These books mean so much to me, and I have read them numerous times and still feel the excitement, the sadness, the joy – everything I felt the first time I read them, over ten years later. I always imagined them becoming a TV series (and actually created my own cast and intro using my mums camcorder and printed pictures, embarrassingly!) but a movie would be amazing. I just hope they do it justice!!

  22. Kasper says:

I can’t help but read this series over and over again. I’ve been in love with it since the seventh grade and six years later it’s still something I can easily fall back into obsessing over. Sweep deserves some sort of an adaptation, and I’m surprised it still hasn’t happened yet. I thought making them into a television series would make much more sense, giving them room to experiment with the characters and story/time-lines. So much great potential from a brilliant series!

  23. ailimhazel says:

I love Sweep and have been waiting anxiously for a movie or a movie series. I admit I have worried about how the series would be handled after reading and then watching Secret Circle and Vamp Diaries. Not a fan of those. But this book series is so wonderful. I re-read it every year and have turned all of my friends into raving fans of the series as well. My only hope is those involved with the screen play stay true to the spirit of the stories and characters. I’m really excited. Yay!

  24. Chris says:

Please make it a movie. I love these books. :)

  25. chandra king says:

I have all the sweep books and love them. I am a 30 something yr old woman and think these books were fantastic. I would love to see them yurned into movies. By the way thanks Cate Tiernan for writing such great stories.

  26. Jacob Juarez says:

I just love the Sweep books, your story has inspired me to become an author myself, and if a movie ever does happen, it’ll be the happiest day of my life, thank yo Cate, for creating a great book.

  27. Autumn says:

My mom got me this book series for Christmas (the first three books in one; she got me the rest in volumes as well later on) and I fell in love with it. Little did she expect it would inspire me to begin following a Pagan path. Oh, she was upset, but I wouldn’t regret it for a second.

  28. Zakiya says:

I love this book. Everytime I read it it’s like seeing it for the first time and I can relate to Morgan Rowlands being that I’m the type of girl no one looks at twice or ever notices unless they need help with a math problem… I LOVE YOU CATE TIERNAN!!!!!

  29. Johanna says:

Read the book series forever ago, I was probably in early high school maybe? Whenever it was, I could completely relate to it at the time and was totally engulfed in it! It saddens me that Sweep wasn’t made into a movie/series before all the other paranormal type movies/shows because it was definitely the original! I immediately thought about this book when it all became so popular and wished this was a series or movie. That being said I think this could still be fantastic! It is so well written that with the right directing and cast I really think it could be a huge hit! Even though I read it in my teens and I’m now in my early 20’s….I think i’m going to have to re-read them. Great job Cate and best of luck, I really hope it happens!

  30. I would LOVE to see this series made into a movie. I actually just purchased this whole series in the five-book pack so I could store them on my bookshelf more easily. My husband has even read them. :) I truly wish you the best of luck and hope it happens!

  31. Danielle says:

I just found out about the sweep series, I’m only on the second book and I already love the series. I hope it really does become a movie!

  32. Brandygirl says:

Oh wow! I just finished Nights Child…and I feel like I’ve lost my bff when the book ended! I LOVE this series and all the characters especially Alisa Soto! I wish they’d have been more about her…Moira is Awesome too..

  33. Amber says:

PLEASE MAKE THE SERIES INTO A MOVIE :) The Books Are SOOOOOOOOOOOOO Good!!! I Didn’t Know There Was A Series To The Book! I Would Have Read Them All By Now Lol. But Anyways, They Are Really Great Books. They Will Keep You Wanting To Read Them More. They Actually Get Addictive lol.

  34. grace says:

i am halfway through the book i love it i really hope every thing goes as planed with the movie and such

  35. Anthony says:

    I love the book series.
I am halfway on the last book “Full Circle”.
I hope the movie goes as planned and I Can’t wait to watch it.

  36. thorn says:

I absolutely loved the whole series because its very accurate to wicca, I know because I am a hereditary witch I loved that the main character is also one but the naming is different, and I love the fact that the author came up with blood witch to classify her and others as witches, and personally I so hope that I catch wind for auditions and can be a witch in the movie that would be so cool!!! (yes witch’s are just like normal people) anyway I love the series and I hope one day to see one about moiré’s adventures since she is the “princess” of belwicket.

  37. Carson Thayn says:

I love this series it is by far my favorite. I am exited and nerves for it as well because so much of the book is about her inner turmoil and I hope they can do that right.

  38. Jessica says:

Didn’t Cate post on her facebook that they decided not to make the movie? I think this deal has been off for a while. I mean I hope it isn’t because these are still my favorite books even though I read them yeaaarsss ago. Anyone know?

  39. Savanna says:

I have been a practicing pagan/Wiccan since 2012. I recently started reading your books and I can’t stop reading. I love them so much. Is there going to be a movie?? If there is, when is out going to come out??
    Blessed Be

  40. Jane says:

I love these books so much. I started the first book and finished it in a couple hours. I love it soo much. I don’t know if the movie is out yet but I don’t think it is. I really can’t wait for it.

  41. Lecura says:

I love these books, they are so addictive you cant put the books down. I hope they make these books into movies and also I hope they hold auditions. I would love to be in the movie if I got the chance.

  42. Vicki says:

I loved the series. Movies that are made based on books never really turn out as well as we would hope. I personally think the books are always better (since you can understand the character’s thoughts and emotions better). But that doesn’t mean it won’t be interesting. I’m so excited to see how the movie’s going to turn out! Fingers crossed!!!!

  43. Brandie says:

I hope you guys start working on the movie soon I been reading these books for a long time and always hoped that some day a movie will happen I just now getting my sister into the books… hopefully be hearing more about this in near future =D

  44. Savanna says:

I would love it if either this series or Balefire became movies, or even both honestly. Cate Tiernan is an amazing writer and It would be absolutely perfect!

  45. Janis says:

I love this series WAY better than Harry Potter or Twilight or Hunger Games! Hope people would just rea one, then they would be hooked! Best of luck!

  46. mikaela says:

i first started reading the sweep series in 7th grade me and my friend were at borders and looking for books, i saw book of shadows and got it on a whim and now it’s easy to say that this is one of my favorite book series’ i haven’t finished the series yet and i’m a senior because for some odd reason the 9th book isn’t sold as paperback anymore but i look forward to finishing the series soon! great books and great story!

  47. Melissa says:

I’m from the Netherlands and I love the Sweep serie! I like to see a movie of it BUT I’m afraid (since a movie are like 90 or 120 minutes) you can’t put it all in one movie… So if there is gonne be a movie I think one movie is not enough to put all the things that happend in the books, bring it back to the movie. I think the option Harry Potter and Twilight did will be much better for a movie, so not 15 books in one movie but 3-5 movies, I think you can show more then you can in one movie.. A tv serie is also an option but will end because the book also ended… But still I will watch it and probably love it!!!

  48. Red says:

I came across this series in my local library while cruising for a good read. I had it finished within an hour, not being able to put it down. I searched for the next book for weeks as it isn’t a big series where i live so its really hard to find the books. i read up to about the fourth/fifth book and have wanted to read them again but unfortunately no access.

This series introduced me into wicca and paganism which has a fascinating view on well…everything.

I thought the variety of characters and how well they were fleshed out was inspiring and simply amazing and if a movie or tv series comes out you can count on me to be a viewer if its available in my country and tv.

thanks for writing a series that gave me a new view on the world.

  49. okcute says:

OMG OMG OMG OMG OMG OMG OMG OMG I cant beleive it the movie?!?!?!?!?!?!?! my one request is the they DONT mess up the characters like Cal or Hunter and for that matter of fact even Morgan or Bree. The characters are one the most important things! like the plot if you mess up the characters then the whole movie’s mess up.
This series introduced me to wicca ( my parents are pagan so…) and have fallen in love with the religion and now am looking for other who share the same fancy. I hope this will be good for the religion itself because it can be pittied on soooo much. After reading this series my mom got me a book on wicca and love it!
I hope who ever reads this series has a new prospective on the religion and life.

  50. Misscassie says:

This is by far my favorite book series of all time!! I’ve read it twice && I’m ready for round three!! I felt as if I knew the characters && could not think about anything else than wanting to read!! It also gave me a different view on a beautiful religion && the world itself. Can’t wait for a movie or tv series!!!
